Quadruple Square Method

Yet another method that yields more than one Flying Geese, this is my very favorite (but the Double Square Method comes in a close second!).  This method is fast and easy and requires very little thought.  If using this process, it yields four (4) Flying Geese.  This method makes use of one large square and four smaller squares (hence the name of the method is derived from the smaller squares).

The instructions given below allow you to make any length of Flying Geese that you want.  To take the "math" out of it, though, refer to the chart at the bottom of the page for measurements.

  1. Cut out the four (4) smaller squares and the one (1) large square needed for this method.

  2. Draw a diagonal line on each of the four smaller squares.

  3. Place the large square, right side of the fabric up, on a flat surface.

  4. Take two of the smaller squares and align them in opposing corners, face down, so that the diagonal lines form one continuous line across the larger square.  Refer to the photo below for more detail.

  5. Sew 1/4" on each side of the diagonal lines, going from one side of the square to the other, as shown.

  6. Cut on the diagonal line, so that you end up with two units, shown below:

  7. Open, then press each unit flat.

  8. Take one of the remaining small squares and align it in the corner of the original large square (which is face up), right side facing down.

  9. Sew 1/4" on each side of the diagonal line.

  10. Cut on the diagonal line, yielding two units.

  11. Repeat steps 7 through 9 on the final large square unit.  This yields another two units.

  12. Press each of the four (4) Flying Geese flat.

*IF THE UNFINISHED SIZE OF THE FLYING GEESE BLOCK IS: THEN, CUT 1 LARGE SQUARE FROM THE GEESE FABRIC THAT MEASURES: THEN, CUT 4 SMALLER SQUARES FROM THE BACKGROUND FABRIC THAT EACH MEASURE:
2.5" X 4.5"  5.25" X 5.25" 3" X 3"
3.5" X 6.5"  7.25" X 7.25" 4" X 4"
4.5" X 8.5"  9.25" X 9.25" 5" X 5"
5.5" X 10.5" 11.25" X 11.25" 6" X 6"
*If your size isn't listed here, you can calculate the sizes needed by using these formulas.  Be sure to go by the finished size! Add 1.25" to the finished size of the length of the Flying Geese. Add 1" to the finished size of the width of the Flying Geese.
