Basic Equipment

Notice:  "All About Blocks" is a work in progress, so be sure to check back often, as more and more free block patterns in multiple sizes are added!  All block patterns that are linked to from the "All About Blocks" pages are created by Terry Crawford, and although most are of traditional patterns, some are original designs.  Please respect the copyright of this site.  Thank you!

Introduction:

Making a quilt can not only be utilitarian, it can also be fun and relaxing!  And having the proper tools to get started makes quilting much easier.

Basic Equipment:

This list of basic equipment is centered around rotary cutting and may not be all-inclusive for your needs, however this is an excellent "starter" kit for quilting.

  • Pencils and marking tools,

  • Two pairs of scissors; one for cutting fabric and one for cutting paper (and never mix the two!),

  • Iron,

  • Ironing board,

  • Sewing machine,

  • Needles, both for hand-sewing and quilting,

  • 18" x 24" rotary mat marked with a 1" grid,

  • 6" x 24" acrylic ruler that is marked in 1/4" increments and includes 30°, 45°, and 60° angles,

  • A 45 millimeter (mm) rotary cutter.  Note:  Be very careful when using this cutter.  It is extremely sharp and can easily slice off the tip of a finger!  And always, always, close the cutter as soon as you finish using it and never leave it laying out around small children.
