«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»«¤»¥«¤»     WELCOME
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Welcome once again!  For those of you that prefer to read this from the Web, you can find this issue at http://www.sregora.com/quilting/QPV1N4.html.

I sincerely hope that this newsletter finds each of you doing well, especially in light of the catastrophic events last week in NYC and DC.  My sincere condolences to all of the families and friends who were touched by this devastating event.

I was thinking earlier today, too,  that people should really refer to the disasters with something other than "terrorist attacks", because by saying "terrorist" we let them think that they're wreaking terror on us, when in fact, we've united together like I've never seen before.  So, I'm hereby going to start referring to the tragedy as "cowardice attacks", because that more aptly describes it for me.  :)  You heard it used here first!

I have been very busy, had several problems creep up in life, the death of a close friend... yet, life must go on.  And I've found that it's best to stay busy in not-so-easy times.

Also, beginning in October, this newsletter is going to be published on a monthly basis, unless I have updates around the 19th.  So, the gist of it is published around the 5th and updates on the 19th, if there are any.  So, don't expect two full editions every month anymore.  I'm making quilting time!

«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»«¤»¥«¤»     MYSTERY PROJECT
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The Mystery Quilt.  What can I say?  It's bigger than ever and my pieces of sewn bits are beginning to take shape!  I've had one person take a guess and she guessed the second option correctly.  Oh, in case you didn't know, this Mystery Quilt can end up being one of three different options, all easy and quick!

There are many samples of what we're doing on http://sregora.com/quilting/mystery.html, so if you haven't dropped by lately, please do!

Pictures are still trickling in and I'm uploading them as fast as I can.  I love seeing the many different "looks" we all have from the same pattern.  That's one of the best things about quilting!

The MQ instructions should be finished sometime during October, perhaps as early as the 15th.  Of course, then you have the task of quilting it... or in my case (since I'm now making 4), quilting all of them.  I'm anxious to get some quilting ideas from you!  I didn't decide to make a 4th one until tonight, when I suddenly decided to make it in a patriotic color scheme.  So, it's back to the fabric store tomorrow to purchase some red, white, and blue.  More shopping!

I'll be sending out a "baby" lesson later this week, probably around the 21st.  After that, the next lesson won't go out until around the 28th or so.   I'm hoping you're still excited about this, I know I am!

If you haven't joined and would like to, it's still not too late!   A person could easily get caught up in a morning or afternoon of cutting and sewing.   Just send e-mail to sregora@sregora.com with MYSTERY in the subject area. And please make sure that you send your subscription request from the address you wish the subscription to go to!

Watch for details in upcoming issues of the QP Newsletter about two new MQs coming up in late December (MQ 2) and early January (MQ 3).  MQ2 will run for about 6-8 weeks and MQ3 will be a one day mini-project marathon on New Year's Day (beginning New Year's Eve).  And if you love a good mystery and want more, be sure to read the Block of the Month (BOM) section.  It's a month to month mystery with clues that I'm going to begin late this week/weekend.  More details of it in the BOM section below.  :)

«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»«¤»¥«¤»     FREE PATTERNS
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
I've slowed down in adding new patterns; been so busy, but I've added about 75 in the past two weeks.  I've also started a new category on the Free Patterns Web page entitled "Patriotic", so if you have a favorite pattern to link that would fit under that category, please send me the address.  To see the free patterns, begin at http://sregora.com/quilting/freepats.html.

I've added a paper-piecing pattern that was created by yours truly, called the Flag of Hope.  It's small enough that it just fits on the wall behind my computer at the office.  You can find it at http://sregora.com/quilting/sregora/FlagofHope.jpg.   It's also very quick and easy to make!

If you have a favorite pattern  that I don't have listed, please send me your suggestion and I'll add it as soon as I can.

«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»«¤»¥«¤»     PATTERN OF THE MONTH
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The pattern of the month this time is an appliquéd wallhanging done by Mary Graham, named "God Bless", done in remembrance of the lives lost due to the Cowardice Attacks.  It's very touching!  You can find it at http://www.qorsite.com/freepatterns/godbless/godbless.pdf.   It's important to note that you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed in order to get it.   If you don't have Acrobat, it's free and you can find download links to it at http://www.adobe.com.

«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»«¤»¥«¤»     PROJECT OF THE MONTH
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
I have the perfect project for you this time.  It's found on the Scrapbag site and is a free Patriotic Banner Pattern.  It's perfect for a wall or door or even to hang from a mail box (which is what the author did)!  The pattern can be found at http://www.scrapbag.net/patrioticbanner.htm and is definitely worth checking out.

If you decide to make this pattern, be sure to let the owner know.   There is a special Web page that the owner is posting pictures of finished banners on, so if you have a digital camera, snap a shot and send it in to her.  There are already two and she just announced it yesterday!

In a nutshell, I welcome suggestions!  Keep them coming!

«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»«¤»¥«¤»     OPINIONS and/or REVIEWS
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
In the last issue, I asked for opinions and reviews on the Alto Quick Cutting system.  I only had one, but here's what she had to say:

"My husband bought the Alto's cutting system for me--------it was a Christmas gift last year.  I don't like it.  I even sent an e-mail to the company that made it and told them what I didn't like about it.  They responded, the letter was very nice.  They weren't upset that I wanted to return it.   My husband bought it at a wood working show in Seattle.  So, the people at Alto's told me I would have to return it through them and gave me info on how to get in touch with them.  I didn't return it because I didn't want to upset my husband.   The thing I don't like about it is I don't feel it is as accurate as using my omnigrid mat and rulers.  I have tired to use it probably 5 or 6 times.  To me it is awkward to use.  Since I am keeping it and will try to use it some more.   One thing I have used it for and liked it was to cut corduroy.  I have a lot of corduroy that I am using to make quilts for Project Linus.  It allows me to cut through more layers than I would be able to otherwise.  So, I will use it for that.   Also I want to do some quilts with old jeans so maybe that would be a good way to cut that.  I just don't understand how anyone could think this is a super accurate system.  I do know that some people really like it.  I was impressed with the response from the maker of the system.  They seem like a very good company to deal with." -- Christina, Washington

Did any of you try the QuiltSheets I mentioned in the last edition?   If so, I'd love to hear what you think.

Do you have an opinion or suggestion you'd like to share?  If so, let me know!

«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»«¤»¥«¤»    SREG'S BLOCK OF THE MONTH (BOM)
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The Wonky Braid  is my September BOM.  It's a paper-piecing pattern that I think would make a great quilt from scraps.  You can read about this quilt at http://www.sregora.com/quilting/bom/sep2001bom.html.   I've added several different layouts so that you can get a good idea of what it has the potential to do.  I love this pattern!  And I have to admit that when I started making it, this was NOT what I had in mind.  It just sort of, um, evolved!   You can either make it in the rectangular design (which uses two different foundation patterns) or in a square design (which only uses one).  This would be a quilt I'd love to make... in my spare time, of course.  Also, I have the EQ4 project, so if you'd like a copy of the project, just let me know.

Remember the series of blocks I mentioned in the last newsletter?   The ones that were going to be five blocks given in a series that you will have the option to either make it a wallhanging gift for your child's favorite teacher OR a very cute baby quilt?  Well, I haven't forgotten it!  Life has just sort of gotten in the way.  I've finished designing the first block and have a prototype.  I'll try to have it online by Sunday, September 23rd.  Keep checking http://www.sregora.com/quilting/bom/ for it's arrival.  If you're new to the newsletter and you wondering how in the world a BOM series can either be a wallhanging or a baby quilt, let me just say that the blocks I've designed are versatile and I'll give you options to fine-tune your wallhanging into either a school-themed one or a baby one.  You'll not only have the option to make either a teacher's quilt or a baby quilt (or both!), you'll also get to decide whether you want it to be set on-point or in the regular layout... and if you've never done a quilt setting on-point, this is your chance to grow!  These five blocks are going to be fairly easy, so if you're new to quilting, these are great for you.  If you're a veteran, then these will make great quickie projects for you.

As usual, insert the necessary copyright notice here.

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
There has been huge addition to the Quilting Passion Web site.   We now have our own interactive forum!  It's called Quilting Passion and can be found at http://forums.about.com/n/main.asp?webtag=quiltingpassion&nav=start.  The forum membership is free and I certainly hope that you take some time to visit us there.  It not only provides a place for many different discussions, but it also allows us to have a live chat area.  I've seen a few in the chat area, but have yet to get anyone to speak to me!   If you already participate in a forum, continue to do so, but I hope you will take an opportunity to visit this one, as well.

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
As you finish MQs and/or blocks, please send me pictures so that I can add them to the gallery.   http://www.sregora.com/quilting/gallery/ is where you'll find them, but it's empty (and so lonely!) right now.  It won't be long before MQs are added there.  I can hardly wait.
