by Terry

I am sitting at my desk in my home office right now and it is just a little after 6 pm on New Year's Eve.  Where did 2006 go???  The vast majority of this year is a blur for me, due to health issues, however I have such fond memories of the past couple of months that it gives me pause to be thankful.  My health has dramatically improved and I am back into the swing of quilting and designing.

I have so many projects planned for 2007 that I am already sure that I will forget to include some of them in this edition of the QP eNews!  I think I have enough plans to keep both you AND me busy!!!

I have made several resolutions for the new year, but one that it as the top of the list involves making quilts for our charity project.  It is my goal to make 12 quilts to donate this coming year.  I challenge each of you to match me!!!

Updating the Quilting Passion Web site is still in progress, and due to its size now (and it continues to grow!), it may take me some time to convert it all over to the new format.  I know that I still have several broken pages out in cyberspace and if you come across one, please send me an e-mail so that I can fix it.  Or if I've moved a page and you can not find it, let me know and I'll point you to it.  I appreciate your patience with me as my virtual dust is being spread about!

Our weather here turned very cold last night.  Have I mentioned that I detest winter???  I love snow, but hate winter, and if it is going to be cold, I want snow.  LOL

As you may remember from the December eNews, I launched an online quilt store, YOUnique Designs, and have a few products ready to go.  The stained glass project that I'm making for mom for Christmas will be a new pattern sold there, as will my photo memory quilts for my sons.  I've also finished the Quiltendar™ and have it and the January patterns ready to go.  I also have two (2) BOMs planned on that site, as well as one on the QP site.  Two out of the three will be free!  All of the items I have available for purchase are listed on the Order Form, however, and if you find something you're interested in and can't find it, just let me know.  You may be asking why in the world I'm opening another site?  Simple answer;  Well, actually two answers.  First, I want to keep the Quilting Passion site non-profit and second, I need another source of income to keep myself healthy!

So, what are your plans for 2007?  Are you staying busy and warm?

      That 2007 is Oklahoma's 100th birthday?

That not only do Texas, Nevada, and Florida not have state income tax, but neither does Wyoming, Washington, or South Dakota?

That there are several holidays in January?

  • The 1st is New Year's Day,

  • January 2nd has been declared a National Day of Observance (in memory of Former President Gerald Ford), in which there will be no postal mail delivery and retail services will be closed,

  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is on the 15th.

The Quilting Passion electronic Newsletter is a free monthly publication that keeps subscribers up-to-date on news that may include:

Do you have any announcements that you feel would be of use to the eNews?  Perhaps a quilt show, a new grandbaby, etc.?  If so, please let me know and I'll squeeze them into the next edition of the eNews.

First, let me say that I have been very busy making patterns!  I mentioned in the last eNews that I had set a deadline for myself of finishing three (3) projects that I began in 2005, and I am happy to report that I accomplished this goal!   I have finished the 2005-2006 Log Cabin BOM (BOM is the abbreviation for Block of the Month), the 2005-2006 Crazy Block BOM, and the 2005-2006 Stained Glass BOM.  All (27!) of these patterns are free, and I hope that if you finish any of them, that you will share a photograph with me!

Need a new wallpaper for your desktop?  Try the new January wallpaper located on the Web!  There are two (2) different versions of it; one with the seasonal graphics overlaying it and one without.  This wallpaper celebrates winter, and this month, I added a special new feature to it by providing the block pattern for you that was used in the quilt calendar.  I don't know why I hadn't thought of that before!!!

What's ahead for Quilting Passion for 2007? New classes via QPU, at least three (3) new  mystery quilts, a BOM for the year (details coming this later this week), and, of course, I have quite a few ideas rolling around in this head of mine.

     Upcoming Events:

For a listing of known quilt shows, birthdays, anniversaries, and other events, please refer to the Quilting Passion Calendar.  If you have an event you would like submitted, please contact me!

This is a new area for me to share interesting tidbits with you!  I hope you enjoy these small bites of information!

  • Give the gift of a quilting book to a quilting friend!  Quilting and Patchwork offers a few suggestions, and I purchased the book "Centennial Stitches:  Oklahoma History in Quilts".  GREAT book!!!

  • Our quilting world lost a famed quilt artist this past month, Effie Mar Howard, who worked under the name Rosie Lee Tompkins.  She was 70 years old at the time of her death in California.

  • And how about this news?  It's rather uncommon to hear of men quilting, but to hear of a 92 year old man quilting?  Most men that retire reach for their fishing poles or golf clubs, but not Henry Vierkant!  He reaches for his needle!  What an inspiration!

  • Another inspiration is Margie Troutman, 76, from Mustang, Oklahoma.  View a beautiful photo of this dear woman with her sewing machine and a few handmade quilts.  She donates her quilts to veterans.

  • For another quilter that is inspirational, read about 93 year old Jane Bordelon, Alabama, who thinks of quilting as her "joy and pride" in life!

  • Quilting is becoming so popular that quilts are coming off of beds and onto walls galleries!

  • What do you think most 3 year old girls were doing over the Christmas holidays?  Well, this beautiful child, Lilly-May Wooliss in Great Britain, used her bed quilt to put out a Christmas tree fire in her room, saving herself and her 1 year old brother!

  • Lastly, you know quilting is the "in thang" when it becomes a computer programming language!  Quilt is an XML Query Language!  How cool is this?

I plan on offering quite a few free patterns to subscribers of the via YOUnique Designs Newsletter.  If you haven't signed up for it, please feel free to do so!

There are plans to kick off a "Block of the Month" series for 2007 on Quilting Passion.  Watch for details later this week!  This will be a simple series that can be used to make a sampler, similar to the previous BOM sampler series that I did.

The Quilting Passion Web site does have quite a few free patterns that I have designed over the past few years, plus these that I have done this past month:

My picks for patterns/projects of the month are educational!

Ever wonder how to properly hang a quilt?  Let Deborah Anderson give you the facts!

Need a quick wallhanging for Valentine's Day?  Mine is fast, fun, simple.  What more could you ask for?

It isn't too soon to be thinking Easter, either, so be sure to check out this adorable bunny appliqué pattern by The Appliqué Society.

I have had several people finish MQ 15, MQ 16, and/or MQ17 and provide photographs.  Be sure to check the gallery for these pictures.  Their creativity with my basic patterns is phenomenal!

I have the next mystery designed and hope to begin it within the next month.  Of course, it has a seasonal theme!  I'd tell you, but, it's a mystery!

If you would like to view previous mysteries, then be sure to check the pictures of quite a few finished mysteries in the Gallery below!

The Gallery has had a lot of new additions (and I mean a lot!), so when you get a chance, take a look at all of the fabulous quilts made from our readers over the past few months.  A very special thank you to those who share their finished projects with me, but most importantly, to those of you that use my patterns!  YOU are the incentive that keeps me designing!  Did you realize that?

If you have made a quilt using one of the patterns on this site, please share a photo with me so that I can add it to the gallery?  When submitting the photo, provide your first name and state that you live in.  I'd certainly appreciate it!

The forum is still alive and kicking, thanks to quilters like you!  Since opening the forum in September 2001, we have had 6,885 people to join.  That doesn't include guests!  This means we have had 59 new members join in December.  We have also had a few lurkers "delurk", which is always a pleasant surprise.  Of course, for those that wish to continue lurking... that's fine, too.  The goal of the forum is to provide an environment where people can come to learn, enjoy, share their projects, and keep up with what's going on our quilting and personal worlds.  I feel blessed that many of you choose to spend your precious time with us!

A few of our monthly projects include:

  • FQ Drawing, which returned in October and it, as well as November, was a HUGE success!!!!!  January is underway!

  • Block Party, which debuts on January 1, 2007, after being on vacation for a long time!

  • Charity Projects,

  • Fabric Swaps,

  • Block Swaps,

  • Noodle Swaps.

Special Projects in progress right now include:

The "Round Robin Charity Drive", or RRCD continues to grow and has quickly become one of the most popular activities on the forum.  We have donated a total of 1,264 quilts since March of 2002, 420 of which have been donated in 2006 alone!  Let me do some math for you:  We finished 35 quilts in the month of December, which is an excellent amount in light of it being in the midst of a hectic holiday season and at the end of the year!!!   I know many of you love this project as much as I do and I just want to tell you THANK YOU for your generosity, compassion, time, effort, and resources to help make an impact on the lives of children and adults that truly need a spark of hope during the most difficult time of their lives.  If you belong to, or know of, a non-profit organization that provides quilts to traumatized and/or terminally ill children and would like to be placed on our waiting list, please feel free to contact me via quilting@quiltingpassion.com.

I mentioned this last month, but it warrants repeating.  You can help our Charity Project just by using a Yahoo search engine!  I would appreciate it if you begin using this search engine on a regular basis and also encourage your friends, co-workers, and family to use it, too.  Be sure to select "Quilting Passion Organization" when you do a search for us to get credit!  The search engine is named GoodSearch.  Instead of typing the Web site in every time you want to use it, it is simple to make it your default search engine by following these simple directions to change the default search provider:

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Left-Click the arrow to the right of the Search Options button (it's located next to the magnifying class icon).
  3. Click Change Search Defaults.
  4. Click on Find More Providers.  It should open a window that has this address:  http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/searchguide/en-en/default.mspx
  5. In the new window, there is a yellow/orange area on the right, titled Create Your Own.  In the top blank area, paste in this address:  http://www.goodsearch.com/Search.aspx?Keywords=TEST
  6. In the second blank area, type in a name for the search engine, such as Good Search.
  7. Click Install.
  8. Click Add in the new window.
  9. Left-Click the arrow to the right of the Search Options button (it's located next to the magnifying class icon).
  10. Click Change Search Defaults.
  11. Select the name of the one you just added, Good Search (or whatever name you used).
  12. Click Set Default.
  13. Click OK.

Again, please use GoodSearch and recommend it to everyone!

There are numerous block and fabric swaps going on, so if you're in the mood to sew, feel free to jump right in!  There are also a couple of monthly drawings that you can play in:  The Fat Quarter Drawing and the Block Party

We just finished a few projects, too, including:

  • Wilma's 50th Anniversary Quilt.  We kept this secret for a couple of months!  That was a miracle in itself.  Our dear Wilma received the quilt this past week and expressed her heartfelt thanks.  If you haven't seen a photo of this quilt, be sure to check them out.  The quilt was done in purple and yellow, and, well, you can read about it via the link above.  :)

  • Quilt Pink Event.  This was done in two parts, on the forum and also locally (Pryor, OK).  Even though one was on the Internet and the other wasn't, they both benefit the same organization: Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.  I collected 28 blocks from the Pryor area (including the Pryor Patchers Quilt Guild) and 65 from the forum, for a total of 93 blocks!  This one is still on the burner, even though the blocks are finished.  There are currently 8 quilts in progress, thanks to this!  These quilts will be auctioned on eBay around May 2007, by the American Patchwork & Quilting® magazine.  A super huge "thank you" to each of you that submitted blocks!

For those of you that are members of this very special forum (which is my home on the Internet!), thank you.  For those of you that haven't visited yet, please do so by clicking here.  Remember, basic membership is still free!

Classes are being planned for 2007; watch for details in January.  One that is definitely in the works is a Quilt As You Go (QAYG) class!  Plans to kick it off are slated for the end of January.

Do you have any suggestions for a class?

The debut of the 2007 Quilting Passion BOM is coming within a few days!  As soon as I calculate the fabric requirements, you'll be the first to know!

Be sure to view the Announcements/Events calendar in the middle column and take note that February 11 through 17 is the Quilting Passion Make A Quilt Week, with the 17th sharing the Make A Quilt Day with Project Linus.  Watch for event details in the February eNews.

I literally have so many design ideas and plans that there is not enough time in the entire year of 2007 to achieve everything I want, but I can promise you this... I will get as much of it finished as humanly possible!!!

Living in the "quilt zone" once again is so comforting!  Are you living in the zone, too?

Any new ideas roaming around in your head that you'd like to share with me?  Ideas for mysteries, swaps, new patterns, anything?

I am excited about the new year.  I am excited to be thinking about the future!  Did I mention how excited I am?

It is my desire that each of you have a wonderful and prosperous new year!!!

Happy quilting,
Terry
