This pattern is now available for sale on the YOUnique Designs, complete with full instructions and fabric requirements for 14 quilt sizes, including miniature, baby, wallhanging, lap, full/queen, king, and wheelchair lap quilts.  These options are not available on this Web site!

I've had a couple of requests for a braided quilt, and as I was trying to perfect all of the lines in a block, the thought finally occurred to me that I didn't have to! I like the wonky, uneven look, so I've titled this the Wonky Braid in honor of the fact that it isn't perfect.

The pattern is a very simple paper-pieced pattern. The unfinished size of each block (both a horizontal block and a vertical) is 5.25" x 6.75" and just fits on a single sheet of printer paper. There's also a square version of this block, that measures approximately 5 1/8" x 5 1/8". The approximate size of the quilt shown is 39" x 48". Make this in pastels or primary colors and it would make a fabulous baby quilt!

The Wonky Braid would also make a great scrap quilt! You can either place all of your lights on one side and the darks on the other or you can just mix them up, willy-nilly style.

There are many layouts and colorations for this quilt pattern and I have taken the liberty to play with the design and show a few of them at the end of the instructions. It is important to note, however, that the instructions given below are specifically for the quilt pictured and that no matter what size (or color) you make the quilt, the blocks are all made in the same manner as described below. You would simply need to make minor adjustments to the number of blocks needed for the look you like and then change your colors accordingly. The samples show some great options.

I have two requests: 1) Since this is a free pattern, in lieu of payment, please send me a picture of a completed quilt or block when you finish, and 2) Please be sure to read my copyright notice before proceeding. I have strict (though very easy and reasonable) guidelines that users must adhere to. Thank you!

Should you run into any problems in making this quilt, or if something in the directions is incorrect, please contact me! It would be greatly appreciated!

The Wonky Braid was designed using EQ 4.1.

INSTRUCTIONS

First, print off the two blocks needed for this quilt: The horizontal block and the vertical block can be printed (from your browser) by clicking on the images to the left to get the full size patterns. The left image is the vertical block and the image on the right is the horizontal one. You need 18 of each of these, 36 total foundation patterns. If you copy them on a copier, be sure to use the same copier for all 36 of the blocks, because copiers distort to some degree and the foundations need to be consistent in size. The best way to print these is simply to print straight from your computer to your printer.
Second, using your favorite method of paper-piecing, sew each block. Trim to the outside line, but the leave the paper on until finished.      Third, complete all 36 of these blocks.

Finishing your quilt

Place the 36 completed blocks in a layout like the one to the left, by sewing 6 blocks into a row, then sewing 6 rows together.

Add the borders (inner border is cut 4.5" wide and the binding is cut 2.5" wide), then remove your paper foundations.

Sandwich the quilt with the backing and batting, quilt, bind, and send me a picture! Enjoy!

The optional square is given at the right, as shown in Sample 4 below.
