Note:  If printing this pattern, it is printed best if the printer setting is set to "landscape" rather than "portrait".

This is a very simple block that can be appliquéd in a short period of time, using your favorite method of appliqué. This block could easily be finished using scraps of small fabric from your stash in greens and purples.

Grape Escapes is a very versatile block in that it can be changed in a variety of ways to achieve many different blocks.

When finished, this block measures 7" x 7".

For help in appliqué, refer to Appliqué Tips and also Freezer Paper Appliqué.

Instructions!

  1. From the background fabric, cut a 8" square.
  2. Print off the pattern sheet located here and if you want a placement diagram, it is here.  This can be made using 1/4" bias tape for the "stem" or print off the pattern for the stem here.
  3. Using fabrics of your own choosing, cut out the pieces given in step 2, being sure to add 1/4" seam allowance, if the method of appliquéing you use requires it.  Try using different purples for the grapes or different greens for the leaves.  This "mixed" look creates movement in the quilt and is pleasing to the eye.  And for an added twist, use some light yellow-green fabric for the grapes (As shown in one of the illustrations at the bottom of the page).
  4. Lightly press your 8" background square in half, on the diagonal.  Do this in both directions.  When finished, it should look like you pressed it in an "X" pattern.  This establishes how to position your pieces on the block.
  5. Lay out the pattern pieces on the block, using the "X" to center it.
  6. Appliqué the pieces into place, beginning with attaching the 1/4" bias strip for the "stem".  You can wind it any way you want!  Then, sew on the leaves, using patterns D, E, F, and G.  And lastly, sew on the grapes, using patterns A and B.  Be sure to not sew down any pieces within 1/4" of the side seams for the seam allowance. If using a turn-under method, be sure to clip inside the sharp curves so that it lays down flat.
  7. Press the entire block flat.
  8. Using the "X" as the center, trim the block to 7.5".  It finishes at 7" x 7".
  9. Options:  Try making placemats or a tablerunner, as shown below!
