Cornerstones

This lesson places the 12 - 2.5" x 2.5" cornerstones into the quilt top, as well as finishes with the remaining sashing strips.

  1. Take one sashing strip and sew one square on each end.

  2. Repeat step 1, so that you have a total of 2 that look similar to this:

    Here are mine:

  3. Next, take three sashing strips and four cornerstones and, beginning with a cornerstone, sew them into a row, such as this:

    Here are mine:

  4. Repeat step 3, so that you have a total of 2 that look similar.

  5. Study the diagram before sewing the next few sashing strips!

  6. Next, lay out the sashings and cornerstones by looking at the diagram in step 5, and as explained in steps 7 and 8.  Here is my layout (which is not yet sewn together, but is laying very close to other pieces in order to get the entire thing in this photo!):

  7. Sew one of the strips from step 1 to the top side of focus block A.  This represents strip 9 in the diagram shown in step 5.

  8. Sew the other strip from step 1 to the bottom side of focus block E.  This represents strip 10 in the diagram shown in step 5.

  9. Sew one of the strips from step 3 to the top side of focus blocks B, C, D.  This represents strip 11 with the arrow in the diagram shown in step 5.  Be careful to match all the seams!  Hint:  When pressing, I press matched seams in opposing directions, so that I can "wiggle" it into place and it will "lock" together, as shown below.  Once I have the seams aligned, I then align the top edges and hold it in place while I sew.  If you need to, insert a pin at the matched seams.

  10. Sew the last strip from step 3 to the bottom side of focus blocks B, C, D.  This represents strip 12 with the arrow in the diagram shown in step 5.  Be careful to match all the seams!

  11. Press the seams so that the units sewn lays flat.  It is important to note that your top at this point has full cornerstones on all of the edges, while in the finished quilt, they are half squares (triangles).  These are trimmed after adding the edge and corner triangles in the final steps.  It is also important to note that the single blocks A and E are not sewn to the middle section yet.  Refer to the picture below of mine at this point.

Or if you need to see it from a different angle, refer to the picture below:

  12. This concludes sewing the sashing strips and the cornerstones.

Lessons 6 and 7 tackle cutting the edge and corner triangles.  The math will be quick and painless!  Lesson 8 will attach the edge and corner triangles to the quilt top and wrap up the quilt.  We're getting close to the finish line!
