Class Description:
The class teaches how to dye in an 18-step gradation of jewel-tone colors
around the color wheel, using a low-water, no-salt method.
Class Objectives:
1) To safely dye 4.5 yards
of fabric with a low-water, no-salt method, using an around-the-color-wheel
gradation, 2) To gain a basic
understanding of equipment and materials used for dyeing, 3)
To become acquainted with (or more familiar with) the dyeing process.
Class Results:
You should have 4.5 yards of beautiful hand-dyed fabric at the completion
of this class!
Class Materials Needed:
4.5 yards PFD (prepared for dye) fabric, cut into fat quarters (example: Kona PFD by Robert Kaufman, available at Hancock's of Paducah)
18 quart or gallon ziplock bags, or 20 ounce solo cups
Plastic dishpan or similar container to hold the bags
An empty and clean 1-gallon milk jug with cover
Small funnel
Measuring spoons
1-cup measuring cup
3 containers for mixing dye concentrates (solo cups or cottage cheese cartons (need to hold 1 cup of concentrate))
3 containers for mixing dyestock (needs to hold 2 cups of dyestock (if squeeze bottles are available, fine, but if not, use any type of container that works))
Mask
Rubber gloves
Something to mix dye with (tongue depressor, Popsicle stick, coffee stirrer, etc.)
2/3 cup urea
2 Tablespoons each color dye (I used Pro dyes 312n Strongest Red, 402c Mixing Blue, and 104 Golden Yellow -- other dyes give somewhat different results)

Tablespoons soda ash

It is extremely important to
practice safety when dyeing fabrics, so be sure to wear the mask and rubber
gloves. It is also important to follow safe sewing rules, such as when
using the rotary cutter. Neither the forum administration nor the
membership (including teachers) are responsible for injury as a result of this
or any other class.
