June, 2002

Notes:

  1. If printing these pages on a printer and you notice the edges cut off, then adjust your printer settings so that it prints "landscape" rather than "portrait".

  2. This quilt will only be available on the Web from now through August 1, 2009.  After that, the complete pattern will be sold.

  3. Be sure to read the guidelines at the bottom of this page.

Finished Quilt without Border is 36" x 36".
Finished Quilt with Border is 44" x 44".

NOTE:  If you wish to make this larger, simply make two of these for a quilt that is approximately 44" x 80" and using 4 of these would be approximately 80" x 80".  Adjust the fabric requirements as needed.

This quilt pattern gives you 24 options in the final layout; all without doing anything extra!

This Mystery Quilt will be given in approximately 10 installments, through August.

Honestly, one of the most relaxing and enjoyable things for me to do is to be outside on a dark summer night, gazing at the stars.  Having been raised in the country of scenic northeastern Oklahoma, I have had thousands of spectacular opportunities to do so, including numerous meteor showers.

So, yes, I'm a stargazer, and by the time you finish this quilt, I hope that you are, too.  And you won't even have to leave your sewing room!

So, put on those fabric-shopping shoes, sharpen that rotary cutter, dust off the mat, pop several casseroles in the freezer (so you can sew and not cook!) and let the fun begin.

Colors, Colors, Colors!

This quilt uses three colors.  You can choose from any ONE of these color options below:

  1. Black, Gray, White

  2. Black, Gray, Yellow (Gold)

  3. Navy, Gray, White

  4. Navy, Gray, Yellow (Gold)

It is important to note that each of these three colors should read solid from a distance, but can be made of tiny prints or tone on tones.  It is also important to note that these three colors must each contrast with one another... in other words, they should be able to stand alone and not get lost in the quilt.

Another option for the "stars" instead of either white or yellow (gold) would be cream.  This decision is totally up to you!

UPDATE:

While shopping, I found fabrics for this quilt that just screamed at me to go into this quilt, so stay tuned for the conclusion of this mystery to see my finished quilt!

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS

Black or Navy without Border (background) 1.25 yards
Black or Navy with Border (background) 2 yards
Gray (star 2) .75 yards
White, Yellow (Gold), or Cream (star 1) .75 yards
Backing without Border 1 yard
Backing with Border 1.5 yards
Binding .5 yards

Here are some guidelines for making this quilt that are very important:

  1. Use a scant 1/4" seam allowance.  A "scant" seam allowance is one that is a few threads short of being the full 1/4".

  2. Measure each piece AFTER pressing the piece.  Pressing as you go seems to make for a quilt that looks neater, plus it flattens each component in the quilt so that it measures accurately and doesn't distort.

  3. Measure, measure, measure as directions are given and compare it to what it should be (I'll tell you what it should be).  Accuracy is critical in the making of this mystery quilt, in that it is going to fit together like a jigsaw puzzle at the end.
