Unit 6

Halloween WALLHANGING

By Terry Crawford
October 12, 2001

Well, here we are... the last batch of instructions for this mini-wallhanging!

I hope you've enjoyed making it as much as I've enjoyed providing you with the directions!

Please e-mail me a picture of your completed Halloween quilt, along with your name (first and last or just first) and location, so that I can put it in the gallery on this site?  I'd certainly appreciate it!

Unit 6

Here are the cutting requirements for this final unit!

2.jpg (5826 bytes)
2

1 - 2.5" strip of the green "grass" fabric that is cut approximately 20" long.

?

4 - 2.5" x 2.5" squares, to be used as the cornerstones of the border.  Your choice of fabric.

?

2 - 2.5" x length of quilt top, for the left and right borders.
2 - 2.5" x width of quilt top (after you add the left and right borders!), for the top and bottom borders.

?

1 - 2.5" x approximately 80" of binding fabric, your choice.

First Things First!

Sew the green strip to the bottom of the quilt top, as illustrated below.  Trim the sides so that they are even with the quilt top, then press the seam to the bottom.

SECOND!

Sew the left and right borders onto the quilt top as illustrated below.  Trim the ends so that they are even with the top and bottom.  Press the seams toward the borders.

THIRD!!! FINAL BORDERS!

Next, carefully measure the width of the quilt top and trim a border strip to that measurement.

Then, sew a cornerstone square to each end of the strip.  Accuracy is important, because you want your cornerstones to line up correctly with the vertical borders.  Refer to the illustration that follows:

Repeat this third step for the bottom border, again being careful in your measuring, so that the cornerstones align properly.

Once you have the top and bottom borders finished, sew them to the quilt top, as illustrated below.

FOURTH!  ANOTHER OPTION!

Would you like another appliqué option?   If not, then skip to the next section (FIFTH).  If so, here it is!

What would Halloween be without a black cat?   True, this is one pretty sorry-looking cat, but I've never claimed to be able to draw!

Click on the black cat pattern to the right, print it off, then appliqué it using your preferred method.  Or improvise, if you want, and use a different cat pattern.  Note:  I cut slits out of the black fabric for the eyes, then fused a bit of white fabric beneath it.

FIFTH!

Time to finish the quilt!

Layer the quilt top with batting and backing, then quilt it.  After it's quilted, add binding and viola, you're finished.   Don't forget to put a label on the back identifying your work of art!

Congratulations! This completes the entire Halloween Mystery Quilt!
