Unit 5

Unit 5 is short and sweet!

It simply involves attaching the sky section you finished in Unit 4 with the pumpkin section you finished in Unit 3, with the option of adding a cute little ghost to appliqué.

If you are not interested in appliquéing the ghost near the stem of the pumpkin, then simply match the seams around the stem and sew Units 3 and 4 together as shown below, press the top flat, then wait for the final lesson, Unit 6, to come out:

Eeeeek!

IT's A GHOST!

First,  I didn't include any white fabric in the requirements at the beginning simply because this was a last second option I decided to add.  A piece of white fabric that is approximately 5" x 6" is large enough to accommodate the pattern given.

To appliqué the ghost, follow these simple instructions:

  1. Click on the ghost image to the right to get the ghostly pattern.  Adjust the pattern size to your own personal preference (although it fits perfectly as is).

  2. Print the pattern.

  3. Using your preferred method of appliqué, transfer the pattern to a small piece of white fabric.  NOTE:  I transfer mine by tracing it onto double-sided fusible webbing, then I peel off one side of the paper, iron the webbing to the back side of my fabric, cut it out, then peel the remaining paper from the webbing and iron it onto my quilt top.  I finish it with a button-hole stitch, using two strands of embroidery floss.

ATTACHING THE GHOST!

Once you have your ghost transferred to the white fabric, it's time to attach it to the sky background.  You do this before you sew the pumpkin section to the sky section.

Referring to the photograph below, notice how I put my ghost into the seam at a small angle?  I also left his arm out of the seam so that it goes over the pumpkin.

Play with yours until you get it how you want it.  If you want the arm going over the pumpkin, be careful not to catch it in the seam when you sew the sky section to the pumpkin section.

Once you have the sky section and the pumpkin sections sewn together, then appliqué the ghost in place.  Refer to the photograph below to see an example of what this looks like (although the sample isn't appliquéd yet!):

Once the ghost is appliquéd in place, use a permanent marker to draw in eyes and a mouth.  Refer to the photograph below.

Congratulations! This completes Unit 5! Unit 6, which is the final unit, is coming soon!
