These are the instructions to piece Unit 3. I hope you're enjoying this Mystery!

The orange fabrics will be referred to as Orange 5 and Orange 6.

Unit 3

Unit 3 is just as easy to piece as the first two units were. And quicker, too!

Make sure to press well after sewing a set of seams!

Here are the cutting requirements:

3

2 - 3" x 3" squares
1 - 2.5" x 2.5" square

5.jpg (5785 bytes)
5

3 - 3" x 3" squares
4 - 2.5" x 2.5" squares

6.jpg (7904 bytes)
6

1 - 2.5" x 2.5" square
1 - 3" x 3" square
1 - 2.5" x 6.5" rectangle

First Things First!

There are two HST (Refer to the HST Tutorial for help in making these, if needed) combinations in this unit: Orange 5/Orange 6 and Yellow 3/Orange 5.

HST:

  1. Use one orange 5 3" square and one orange 6 3" square to make this set of HST. This gives you two of this combination of HST:

    wpe1.jpg (1097 bytes)

  2. Use one orange 5 3" square and one yellow 3 3" square to make a set of HST. This gives you two of this combination:

    wpe2.jpg (1027 bytes)

  3. Repeat step 2 because you need a total of four of the orange 5/yellow 3 combination HST.

  1. ACCURACY CHECK: You should have 2 HST of orange 5/orange 6. You should also have 4 HST of orange 5/yellow 3. This makes a total of 6 HST.

SECOND!

Next, we're going to sew two separate sections.

  1. Using the 2.5" squares, sew an orange 6 to an orange 5. Then, sew an orange 5 to the orange 6 on the opposite end. You should have this section:

    wpe3.jpg (2160 bytes)

  2. Using the orange 6 rectangle, sew it to the 2.5" yellow square. You should have this section:

THIRD!!! DECISIONS!

Well, I'm assuming that by now you've figured out that this is a pumpkin! If not, guess what? This part is a pumpkin!

So, this third part is going to require a decision on your part. The decision? How do you want your pumpkin to look? Happy? Mean?

Well, you can get different "looks" by laying out some of the pieces differently.

Lay the following sewn pieces out on a flat surface in the same order that is illustrated here:

face.jpg (34853 bytes)

Now, you should have 4 of the orange 5/yellow HST left. These are the eyes and the two corners of the mouth. Play with these to get the "look" you like, then sew the entire unit together so that it ends up looking similar to this (yours may look different depending on the type of face you chose, but the only parts that will be rotated are the ones with yellow in the HST):

Here are some different "look" options for this unit:

PUMPKIN ASSEMBLY!

Sew Unit 1 to Unit 3, as shown.

Congratulations! This completes Unit 3! Unit 4 is coming soon!
