Mystery Quilt 3

Halloween WALLHANGING

Indicates newly added in October, 2001

This is a unique mini-project that can be done in a short amount of time using scraps of fabric.  The mini-project itself will span over a time of approximately 10 days and the finished wallhanging measures about 22" x 24".

This mini-project is also unique in that it has a few appliqué options at the end to choose from.

Fabric requirements for this mini-project are not given merely because it can be done from scraps.

Backing and batting fabric should be at least 24" x 26", though.

Color and Fabric Selections are suggested as follows:

  1. Dark Blue (for a midnight sky)
  2. Dark Green (for grass)
  3. Bright Yellow/Gold (can be a small print)
  4. Bright Yellow 2 (can also be the same as the other one)
  5. Orange 1 (Dark Orange background)
  6. Orange 2 (Medium/Light Orange background, different print than Orange 1)

1        2         3        4         5       6

The orange fabrics will be referred to as Orange 5 and Orange 6.

Halloween fabrics look great in this!

NOTE:  I would highly recommend making a fabric chart to keep your yellows and oranges straight!

Units 1 and 2

Units 1 and 2 consist of three parts each.  They are similar to one another in the respect that Unit 2 is a mirror image of Unit 1.

Follow this table for cutting instructions:

Part 1 1.jpg (6310 bytes) 1 2 - 2.5" x 6.5" rectangles
  2.jpg (5826 bytes) 2 2 - 2.5" x 4.5" rectangles
Part 2 1.jpg (6310 bytes) 1 1 - 3" x 3" square
  2.jpg (5826 bytes) 2 1 - 3" x 3" square
  6.jpg (7904 bytes) 6 2 - 2.5" x 6.5" rectangles
2 - 3" x 3" squares
Part 3 6.jpg (7904 bytes) 6 2 - 3" x 3" squares
  5.jpg (5785 bytes) 5 2 - 2.5" x 6.5" rectangles
2 - 3" x 3" squares

Units 1 and 2, Part 1

  1. Sew one of the blue 2.5" x 6.5" rectangles to the green rectangle, end to end. Press the seam in either direction.

  2. Next, sew the other blue rectangle to the end of the other green rectangle.  Press the seam in either direction.

Part 1 should look like the illustration at the left. There should be two of these.

Units 1 and 2, Part 2

  1. Using the blue 3" square and the orange 6   3" square, make 2 Half-Square Triangle (HST) that measure 2.5", unfinished.  If you are not familiar in making these, refer to my HST Tutorial.  Be sure to trim and square these up to 2.5".

  2. Using the green 3" square and another orange 3" square, make 2 HST that measure 2.5" unfinished.  Be sure to trim and square these to 2.5".

  3. Accuracy Check:
You should have 2 of each of these, each measuring 2.5" square:

Using the following illustration, assemble Part 2 of Units 1 and 2:

    Unit 1, Part 2 Unit 2, Part 2

Units 1 and 2, Part 3

  1. Using the orange 5 3" square and the orange 6 3" square, make 2 Half-Square Triangle (HST) measuring 2.5" square.  If you are not familiar in making these, refer to my HST Tutorial.  Be sure to trim and square these up to 2.5".

  2. Using the last orange 5 3" square and the last orange 6 3" square, make 2 HST measuring 2.5" square.  Be sure to trim and square these to 2.5".

  3. Accuracy Check:
You should have 4 of these, each measuring 2.5" square:

    4.  Using the following illustration, assemble Part 3 of Units 1 and 2:

    Unit 1, Part 3 Unit 2, Part 3
    unit1part3.jpg (23666 bytes) unit2part3.jpg (24073 bytes)

    5.  ACCURACY CHECK:

You should have the following parts for Unit 1:

    Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
    unit1part1b.jpg (8190 bytes) unit1part2b.jpg (13736 bytes) unit1part3b.jpg (11257 bytes)

    6.  Sew Part 2 to Part 1, then sew Part 3 to Part 2.   Press.  You end up with this as Unit 1:

    leftpumpkin.jpg (30298 bytes)

    7.  You should have the following parts for Unit 2:

    Part 1 Part 2 Part 3

    unit1part1b.jpg (8190 bytes)

    unit2part2b.jpg (13053 bytes)

    unit2part3b.jpg (11917 bytes)

    8.  Sew Part 2 to Part 1, then sew Part 3 to Part 2.   Press.  You end up with this as Unit 2:

You should have Units 1 and 2 completed.   They look similar to these:
