The second block, Block 2, is the alphabetic letter "B".  This block is an appropriate block for either a baby quilt or the the school-related quilt and measures 10.5" when pieced together in this lesson.

The B Block is going to be sewn in three (3) units:

  • Unit 1 - Consists of 3 sections
  • Unit 2 - Consists of 4 sections
  • Unit 3 - Consists of 5 sections

See Diagram 1 at the left for how this block is broken down into these units.

Tip:  Use a scant 1/4" seam allowance when piecing.   This allows the room necessary for folding the fabric and pressing.  A "scant" 1/4" seam allowance is sewing a couple of threads short (smaller) of a precise 1/4".

UNIT 1

Unit 1 consists of three sections, two of which are pieced in the same manner and are simply HST.  See Diagram 2 for an illustration of Unit 1.

Diagram 2

Please read the cutting and assembly directions before beginning because these units include half-square triangles (HST).  There are many methods for preparing HST, and both the cutting and the sewing directions are given using the method that I use.  Refer to my HST tutorial for my (easy!) method of making HST, if you do not have a preferred method.

Refer to the following table for cutting directions.

CUTTING DIRECTIONS
Focus Fabric
(blue in the sample above)
Background Fabric
(white in the sample above)
*Cut 1 square, 3" x 3" *Cut 1 square, 3" x 3"
  Cut 1 rectangle, 2.5" x 6.5"

* indicates that these squares are used to make the HST.   If you use a different method, then cut these squares the sizes that you need in order to get a 2.5" HST.

Using the 3" x 3" squares, make the HST.  2 HST are needed.

Unit 1 is assembled by sewing Section 2 to Section 1.   Press.  Then sew Section 3 to Section 2.  Press.

Refer to Diagram 3 to see how Unit 1 should look.

  This completes Unit 1.

UNIT 3

Unit 3 is assembled in 5 sections, of which two of those sections are HST, two of them are solid squares, and the last is a half-quarter square triangle (HQST).  At this point, you may be wondering what the difference is between a HQST and a QST.  Refer to the illustration below to see the difference:

QST-HQST.jpg (17944 bytes)

As you can see, the difference is that the QST has 2 colors, alternated.  The HQST only has one quarter of the block one color and the other three-quarters are the second color.

Refer to the following table for cutting directions.

Background Fabric
(white in the sample above)
*Cut 2 squares, 3" x 3" *Cut 1 square, 3" x 3"
**Cut 1 square, 3.5" x 3.5" **Cut 1 square, 3.5" x 3.5"
Cut 2 squares, 2.5" x 2.5"

* indicates that these squares are used to make the HST.   If you use a different method, then cut these squares the sizes that you need in order to get a 2.5" HST.

** indicates that these squares are used to make the HQST.   If you use a different method, then cut these squares the sizes that you need in order to get a 2.5" HQST.

To make a HQST, follow these simple directions (or use your own method):

  1. Use a 3.5" square of each fabric and make a HST.  This makes 2, but you only need one of them.  The other is a "scrap".
  2. Take one of the HST and place it right sides together with one of the 3" squares.  Sew it just as you would a HST, by drawing a diagonal line down the middle, then stitching 1/4" on BOTH sides.  Cut on the diagonal line, press, then square it to 2.5".  This should give you 2 HQST, but you only need one.  Add the second to your "scrap" pile.

The HQST should look like this:

UNIT 2

Unit 2 isn't nearly as difficult as it looks!   It's sewn in sections.  Refer to the following illustration to see how this unit is divided into four sections.

Refer to the following table for cutting directions.

CUTTING DIRECTIONS

Focus Fabric
(blue in the sample above)
Background Fabric
(white in the sample above)
Cut 3 rectangles,  2.5" x 6.5" Cut 2 squares, 2.5" x 2.5"
*Cut 1 square, 3" x 3" *Cut 1 square, 3" x 3"
Cut 1 rectangle, 2.5" x 4.5"

* indicates that these squares are used to make the HST.  If you use a different method, then cut these squares the sizes that you need in order to get a 2.5" HST.

Use the 3" x 3" squares to make HST.   2 HST are needed.

Unit 2 is assembled in 4 sections.  Sections 1, 2, and 4 do not require any assembly.

However, Section 3 does require assembly.  Refer to the  illustration at the right to see how Section 3 should look after assembly.

section3.jpg (18995 bytes)

Section 3 is going to be assembled in 3 parts.   Parts 1 and 3 are the same, with the exception of the direction of the HST being used.  Refer to the illustration in the table below to see how Parts 1 and 3 are assembled.

Unit 2, Section 3, Part 1 Assembly

part1.jpg (12101 bytes)

Unit 2, Section 3, Part 3 Assembly

Part 2 doesn't require assembly.

Refer to the following table for an illustration of how Section 3 of this Unit is assembled.

Unit 2, Section 3 Assembly

Now that you have Section 3 assembled, the rest of the Unit assembly is simple.  Follow the illustration given below:

Here's a peek at one of the options our quilt could now resemble:

BLOCK "B" ASSEMBLY

Assembly is very easy.  It's Unit 1 + Unit 2 + Unit 3.  Refer to the illustration below.

Congratulations!   Block 2, "B", is now complete!  It measures 10.5" and should be pressed flat.
